Frogs With Real Superpowers

If I told you an animal can turn into an ice cube and come back to life, wouldn't you wonder how? Did you know that frog skin holds powerful chemicals that scientists use to make new human medicines from? And if you were born as a soft egg underwater, then lost your tail, grew legs, and then developed lungs to breathe on land, wouldn't you consider yourself a superpower? The meds being developed from frog skin secretions are helping develop new antibiotics capable of fighting drug-resistant superbugs like MRSA. And some frogs have skin peptides that can target and disrupt human tumor and leukemia cell membranes. Plus, a South American frog has led to a potential new painkiller that may lack some of morphine's side effects.

Renewal, Adaptation, Transformation

Renewal. Frogs have long symbolized new beginnings because of their life cycle and their appearance after spring rains. Adaptation. Amphibians literally bridge two worlds, water and land. Few animals embody adaptation better. And transformation. This one is almost inseparable from frogs because of metamorphosis from tadpole to adult. They tie together biologically and symbolically. They are singers, sensitive to sound and emotional state of others. They encourage us to come into our own creative powers. The frog's call isn't just a noise, it's an announcement. I am here.

Belly Drinking Patch And Weird Eating

The frog, my biggest physical takeaway is that did you know that frogs don't drink water? What? Are you kidding me? They live in it. Instead, they absorb moisture directly through a special drinking patch on their belly and thighs. So all the while I've put out shallow balls, even a dustpan full of water. It was their immersion in it rather than their lapping it up that helped them survive these horrific temperatures. Another thing I did not learn in school, when a frog eats, I'll get into that in a minute, it pulls its eyeballs deep down into the roof of its mouth to physically push the swallowed food down its throat. I don't know about you, but I'm glad I don't have to do that. This happens because frogs can't chew. They swallow their meals whole without using teeth. I imagine they were a bit picky about what they put in their mouths. And my second thought, yuck, after learning this, was to wonder if frogs ever taste their food. And the answer is yes. They have taste buds on their sticky tongues and inside their mouths so they can detect bitter, salty, sour, and sweet. But because they are lightning fast with their tongue and swallow without chewing, it's more of a quick taste than a satisfying meal time lingering flavor experience. For the record, a frog will immediately detect if a bug is safe or toxic and spit it out if foul or prickly. This gets even more impressive. What happens when they accidentally swallow a toxic bug? Brace yourself to be disgusted or impressed. Frogs can actually push their entire stomach out through their mouth to clean it out.

Diet, Pest Control, Pond Cleanup

Frogs are not vegetarians, they are meat eaters, and they love to eat live bugs, whether they are flying or crawling bugs. This means they eat flies, mosquitoes, mauve, and crickets. And if it's a big frog, worms, spiders, snails, small fish, and mice. Frogs come in three stages: tadpoles, froglets, and adult frogs. Tadpoles mainly eat algae, young froglets switch to insects, and adults become skilled hunters that can eat anything from mosquitoes to worms, and the largest bullfrogs have been known to eat small fish, mice, and baby birds. Again, my podcast points out some of the most fascinating things we usually don't know about the animals I describe. Keep in mind, after describing what they eat, that frogs are vital pest controllers. They eat billions of insects, like mosquitoes and flies, which helps protect crops and stops disease from spreading to humans. Because tadpoles eat algae in ponds and streams, they keep the water clean and clear. So how deep is a frog pond? Knee deep. Frogs are very helpful to scientists because they have thin skin that absorbs water, air, and chemicals from their environments. They live on land and in water, so any changes in their health quickly shows scientists an area is polluted or in danger. Frogs are cool because the tadpoles filter our drinking water and kids love them. I cannot tell you how many little toads I held as a child. Despite being worn I'd get warts if I did. Just because frogs have bumpy mumpy skin that looks like human warts doesn't mean you would get warts. It was meant to scare children into leaving wild animals alone. Obviously, that never worked on me. Human warts are strains of human HPV, which do not live on amphibians. Frogs' bumps are defensive glands used for defense or moisture, not contagious growths. Remember, I use an actual dust pan on one side of the yard filled with water for the little toads to walk into, and on the other side of the house is a large white plate that I keep filled with shallow water and rocks for the itty-bitty toads to hop around in. I put white rocks in just in case some of the toads cannot hop out. Recently, I found a frog swimming around in my deer container of water. He couldn't get out. I had a shallow, large plastic plant plate that I keep fresh water in for the birds to take a bath in. And frankly, I just think the frog just didn't follow the sage advice of look before you leap.

For the record, cultures worldwide honor frogs as powerful symbols of rain, fertility, and renewal because of their life cycle and sudden appearance during seasonal rains. Ancient societies tied these amphibians to creation, birth, and agriculture. Egyptians worshipped Hecate, a frog-headed goddess who symbolized fertility and water and helped women during childbirth. People wore metal and stone frog amulets to bring good luck and safe deliveries. Millions of frogs appeared when the Nile flooded, which signaled rich sorrel and bountiful crops. Indigenous Northwest Coast and Native American cultures honor the frog as the keeper of sacred seasons and a bridge between man and nature. Carvings of frogs decorate houseposts, totem poles to represent wealth, peace, and protection for the home. Many groups view frog calls as sacred announcements of much needed rain and spiritual cleansing. The Japanese word for frog, kotaroo, sound identical to the word for to return, and thus they stood for safe travel. Travelers and families carry small frog trinkets to ensure a safe journey home or smooth recovery from illness. There are over 4,700 species of frogs. Just to compare to us, there's only one human species that remains, Homo sapiens. But history shows that at least 15 to 21 recognized extinct species within the genus Homo, and up to 30 if one counts the broader early homines. As usual, when I share where any animal is found, frogs are everywhere except Antarctica. Each year a frog goes into hibernation. A new layer of bone forms. Scientists can estimate a frog's age by counting those growth rings in its bones. Frogs are truly an amazing species, able to jump 20 times their own height or higher. They come in all sorts of colors. Many tropical frogs, like those that are yellow, act as a warning to predators that they are poisonous. How do these predators know this? Predators of frogs have a survival strategy called aposomatic colorations, meaning warning coloration, where bright colors signal toxicity. Predators instinctively avoid bright hues associating, especially the bright yellow, with a foul taste, sickness, or death after one bad experience. I imagine death would do that for

Croaks, Choruses, And Childhood Songs

me. I always wondered when I listened late at night to the frog singing if a male frog sounded different from a female frog. Of course I looked it up and I'm sharing. Male frogs are loud and vocal, not surprising, and female frogs are mostly silent or make only very muted sounds. I personally expected females to be the harmonious part of the duet. However, male frogs use specialized vocal sacs under their mouths to amplify their croaks, chirps, and peeps to attract mates. Then there's a territorial noise to warn other male frogs to go jump. I learned that the symphony of frogs I listened to late at night was a chorus of male frogs. Female frogs don't have that large vocal sack and don't sing to attract males. They do have, interestingly enough, a go away, let go of me grunt to say no means no, they don't want to mate. As a child, I was given a ukulele, and one of the first songs I ever played and sang was the Frog Winter Courton song. And I know I called it Froggy Wintercortin. This is the song of a frog with a sword and pistol who proposed to a mouse, Miss Mousy. She was willing to marry the frog, but had to get permission from Uncle Rat. He gave consent. The wedding took place in a hollow tree with a meal of fried mosquito and a black-eyed pea. It ended chaotically, and I think I just ended the song with a refrain rather than the last lyrics. Teeth, Freezing Frogs, Rare Toads

up. Before I get into the significant meaning of a frog in your life or dreams, I have to share four more things, hard to choose what, to cause great awe from everyone. Frogs have teeth on their upper jaw. They used to keep their prey in one place until they swallow, reminding you they don't chew. Of course, if they did, their favorite restaurant would be IHop. On the side of a frog are ears that are called tympunnum, and they are round and located just behind the eye. The male frogs' ears are larger, so you'd need to have a two or three frog gathering to compare to determine if a female is present. And certain species of frogs can freeze nearly solid in the winter and emerge unscathed in the spring. Wood frogs evolved to freeze up to 65% of their body every winter. This particular amphibian produced urea and glycosin to make a kind of antifreeze that fills and protects their cells and vital organs while the rest of the body freezes solid. And finally, fourth, is that the Bronx Zoo is one of the only places in the world where you can see one very special frog called Hiansi spray toad. They are extinct in the wild. It is the only frog that gives birth to live young. They are born as frogs, not tadpaws. Spiritual Meaning And Leap Forward

wild. The central part of understanding a frog's spiritual meaning is to know its connection to emotional cleansing and energetic purification. Frogs live in and around water, the spiritual element associated with emotion, intuition, and the subconscious. They are widely seen as symbols of release and renewal. Metamorphosis, their growth from a tadpole to an adult frog, mirrors personal evolution and outgrowing past phases of life. Transformation, emotional healing, and renewal. As creatures who move from water to land, they represent the transition between the subconscious and the conscious. Because frogs are linked closely to water, they symbolize washing away heavy emotional baggage and toxic patterns. Leaping forward, frogs encourage you to trust your instincts and to take a bold step into a new chapter. In other words, take a leap of faith. Frogs represent abundance and luck. Most of all, they represent transformation, regeneration, and renewal. When a frog jumps into your life in any form, it indicates that now is the time to find opportunities in transition. Leap forward one hop, one step at a time. The appearance of a frog is a lucky omen signal that roadblocks are clearing, allowing you to successfully leap across obstacles toward your goals. Frogs represent a divine feminine energy. Frogs are connected deeply to the lunar cycles, moisture, and the creation of life. They remind you to tap into your soft, receptive, and fluid nature.
