Orcas are dolphins, porpoises are not, and dolphins literally name themselves. That’s where we start, because a few precise dolphin facts can completely change how you see the ocean. I walk through what makes a dolphin a dolphin, why the killer whale belongs in the Delphinidae family, and the physical clues that separate dolphins from porpoises when you’re trying to make sense of a real-world sighting.

From there, we go deep into dolphin biology and dolphin intelligence in the most practical way: how calves develop signature whistles for lifelong identity, why dolphins sleep with one brain hemisphere at a time, and what voluntary breathing means for survival. We also explore pods and superpods, mother-calf bonds, and the breathtaking mechanics of the blowhole. Then we shift into how dolphins perceive reality through echolocation, clicks, and an entire vocabulary of sounds, including the surprising signal they make when they’re annoyed.

The tone turns thoughtful when we talk about ocean noise pollution, entanglement in fishing gear, and the ways human activity can disrupt feeding, communication, and orientation. I share a personal story of wild dolphins choosing to approach me, and we sit with the ethical question underneath dolphin tourism: does loving an intelligent wild animal entitle us to touch it or confine it? We also revisit the cultural imprint of Flipper and what happened when captivity collided with a creature built for freedom, stimulation, and social life.

If you care about dolphins, this is a listen that asks for more than admiration. Subscribe to Animal’s Sacred Wisdom, share this with someone who loves the ocean, and leave a review with your answer: what does real respect for dolphins look like to you?
